Lets start with the passage, straight from The verses go like this
KJV
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank

Jacob wrestled with the Lord, rather than with an angel. This because Jesus and not an angel gives blessings and has the power to change names. For it was Jesus, that Jacob wrestled with. Obviously Jesus could have defeated Jacob at any time, but was merely testing Jacob's resolve, in how much Jacob wanted to be saved, how much he wanted salvation for not just him but his whole family, Jacob was afraid and didn't want his brother Esau, to wipe them out, in vengance to what Jacob had done to him, years earlier. But Jacob after being under the treacherous uncle Laban, had learned not to be deceptive and trick others. Jacob had repented, and was 'sorry'. (Read the previous verses in the 32nd Chapter of Genesis)
This was 'Jacobs Trouble', for even though evading the tricky uncle Laban and serving him for all those years, Jacob was still in trouble, and even more so as he approached his homeland and his brother ESAU, who he himself had tricked.
Its an exact parallel, of someone receiving 'salvation', the greatest blessing of all, that literally protects us into Eternity. Jacob becoming Israel, was because Jacob CHOSE the blessing, wanted the blessing, needed the blessing, and fought for the blessing, until it was finally granted him by the Lord.
It didn't mean, all his descendants in the future would be saved. All Israel will not be saved, just because they group in a country, or become a nation. That would be favor-tism and partiality, and giving out blessings just because of a line-age or blood line. For the basic principle is always, each soul, each person, each individual is responsible for their lives and choices. Each must choose like Jacob, whether they really want 'salvation' and
'freedom from the past' to become a new creature, a new individual, saved by the Grace of God, salvation via 'Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. There's no other way, our parents can not choose for us, bloodlines don't determine whether we have salvation for Eternity or not. We each must choose.
